If you sell shares on the ex-date (or record date in India), you still get the corporate action benefit (dividend, bonus, rights) because the shares remain in your Demat account until T+1 (next day), making you the eligible shareholder on the record date. However, buying shares on the ex-date means you won't get the benefit, as you're not registered as an owner by the record date.
