Can BTST result in penalties?

Yes. In BTST trading, you sell shares before they are credited to your demat account and rely on the original seller for delivery. If the seller short-delivers, you may fail to meet your delivery obligation, leading to an exchange auction. In such cases, an auction penalty may be levied, which can be up to 20% of the value of the short-delivered shares.
