What does “haircut” mean in trading?

In trading, a haircut is the reduction applied to the value of a security when it is used as collateral. Ventura applies a haircut on pledged holdings to account for risk. The haircut percentage determines how much value is retained as margin, while the remaining value is made available to you as a trading limit against shares.
