What is a bonus issue?

A bonus issue is when a company gives free additional shares to its existing shareholders, usually in proportion to their current holdings, by capitalizing its retained earnings or reserves. It's a corporate action to reward shareholders and increase the total number of outstanding shares, but it doesn't change the overall value of an investor's holding because the share price adjusts downwards proportionally.
