Not every stock under ₹50 is tradeable intraday. Most aren’t. The ones worth looking at share a few characteristics:
If a stock normally trades 2 lakh shares a day and today it’s already traded 8 lakh by noon, something is driving it — news, operator activity, or genuine institutional interest. That volume is what creates the movement you can trade. Without it, you’re just sitting in a stock waiting for something to happen.
Intraday trading needs range. A stock that moves 3-5% on an active day is tradeable. One that barely moves 0.5% even on high volume gives you nothing to work with after brokerage and transaction costs.
In stocks under ₹50, spreads can be wide relative to price — a ₹0.20 spread on a ₹35 stock is already 0.57% of the trade value, which adds up quickly across entries and exits. Check the live order book before entering, not just the last traded price.
News, results, sector event — something should be driving the volume. Stocks that move without any identifiable reason are more likely to reverse sharply than to sustain momentum through the session.
This segment is where retail traders lose money fastest — not because the stocks are bad but because the risk management is absent.
Pick a level before entry. For intraday trades in this price range, a 3-5% stop is standard. Hit it, exit — no reconsideration, no averaging down, no hoping it comes back before close.
Stocks under ₹50 with high intraday volume can gap down significantly the next morning if the catalyst reverses. Intraday means intraday. Exit before 3:15 PM regardless of where the position is.
Five positions at ₹20,000 each is ₹1 lakh at risk. Three positions at ₹50,000 each is the same amount but concentrated differently. Think in rupees of exposure, not number of trades.
The low absolute price means you can buy more shares for the same capital — which amplifies percentage moves into larger rupee gains. That's the appeal. The flip side is that the same amplification works against you when the trade goes wrong, and liquidity in this price range can dry up quickly.
Screen for stocks in this price range showing volume at least 3x their 10-day average by mid-morning, with price already moving in a clear direction. Cross-reference with news — results, order announcements, sector events — to confirm there's a reason behind the volume.
Honestly, no. The combination of low prices, high volatility, and thin liquidity makes this one of the harder environments to trade profitably. Beginners are better served starting with liquid large cap stocks — Nifty 50 components — where price discovery is cleaner and exits are easier.
