Why Is the Market Falling Today Crude Oil, FII Selling and Rupee Weakness Pressure Nifty & Sensex
Share

Summary:

Indian stock markets fell on October 12, 2026, as elevated crude oil prices, persistent foreign investor outflows and rising bond yields weighed on sentiment. The Nifty and Sensex surrendered early gains, while sector performance remained mixed across equities.

The Nifty 50 fell 157.10 points (0.70%) to 22,363.35, while the Sensex declined 547.65 points (0.76%) to 71,924.68 at the closing bell. Both indices surrendered early gains as elevated crude oil prices and US bond yields weighed on sentiment. Brent crude remained above $105 per barrel, raising concerns over India's import costs and inflation.

Persistent FII Selling Adds to Market Weakness

Foreign institutional investor (FII) selling continued to pressure Indian equities. Foreign portfolio investors withdrew approximately ₹44,166 crore from equities in October through October 9, taking CY2026 outflows beyond ₹3 lakh crore. Meanwhile, the rupee strengthened nearly 1% to ₹95.76 against the dollar following fresh RBI measures, but the recovery failed to sustain market optimism.

Global Uncertainty and Rising US Treasury Yields

Elevated US Treasury yields and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East added to selling pressure. The US 10-year bond yield remained around 5.24%, making dollar-denominated investments more attractive and potentially encouraging foreign capital outflows.

Sector-Wise Impact

IT, FMCG and PSU banking stocks were among the major laggards, while automobile, media and realty shares showed relative strength. Tech Mahindra faced selling pressure ahead of its Q2FY27 results, while ITC and Bharti Airtel also declined. Broader market performance remained mixed despite weakness in benchmark indices.
