Summary:

Indian stock markets fell on October 12, 2026, as elevated crude oil prices, persistent foreign investor outflows and rising bond yields weighed on sentiment. The Nifty and Sensex surrendered early gains, while sector performance remained mixed across equities.

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) have pulled out ₹44,166 crore from Indian equities so far in October 2026 continuing the selling pressure from September. As per data available with the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) till October 11, total FPI outflows from Indian stocks have reached around ₹3.04 lakh crore in CY2026, much higher than the outflows during the entire last year.

October Brings the Heat to FPI Selling

But two months of buying later, foreign investment flows turned negative in September. The selling intensified in October on the back of rising crude oil prices, higher US treasury yields and continuing weakness in the Indian rupee.

The latest monthly outflow of ₹44,166 crore includes ₹45,126 crore withdrawn through stock exchange transactions, with the balance of ₹960 crore being invested through the primary market.

FPI Equity Investment Trends, 2026:

PeriodNet FPI Investment
July 2026+₹20,200 crore
August 2026+₹29,631 crore
September 2026-₹35,861 crore
October 2026 (up to October 9)-₹44,166 crore
CY2026 (up to October 9)~-₹3.04 lakh crore

Conversely, foreign investors pulled out about ₹1.66 lakh crore in the whole of CY2025.

The surge in sell-offs highlights the challenges emerging equity markets face as global financial conditions tighten.

Why are foreign investors selling Indian stocks?

There are a number of reasons for the continued withdrawals.

Higher yields on US government bonds: The yield on 10-year US government bonds now exceeds 5% making dollar-denominated fixed income assets more attractive relative to riskier emerging market assets.

Crude oil prices are on the rise as Brent crude crosses $100 a barrel over supply concerns. 3. India imports almost 90% of its crude oil needs and higher prices will swell the country's import bill and put pressure on the rupee.

Currency weakness: If the rupee weakens, foreign investors will get lower dollar returns even if domestic share prices do not change.

Move to North Asian markets Investment opportunities in artificial intelligence have attracted foreign capital to markets such as South Korea and Taiwan.

Taken together, these developments have put pressure on Indian equity valuations and foreign investment flows.

Markets supported by domestic investors

Overseas selling has been persistent, but domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and mutual funds have remained an important source of demand.

Equity mutual funds saw net inflows of ₹38,306.55 crore in September 2026, up by around 30.6 per cent MoM.

Equity funds received ₹9,038.57 crore from small-cap category and ₹7,844.95 crore from mid-cap category.

These inflows point to ongoing domestic participation, but they have not fully counterbalanced the broader market correction.

The Nifty 50 has fallen around 13.9% in CY2026 till October 9, as investor sentiment turned sour and pressure mounted across several sectors.

What can change the FPI selling story?

Foreign investment flows will be determined by world interest rates, crude oil prices, currency movements and corporate earnings.

Falling US bond yields could make dollar-denominated investments less attractive, while crude oil price stability could ease pressure on India's external balances.

India’s Q2FY27 corporate earnings will also be critical in deciding if valuations will continue to be supported by earnings growth.

For now, domestic institutional buying is still buffering some of the selling pressure. However, continued foreign outflows could keep Indian equities volatile until global financial conditions and flows improve.
