Power Demand Hits Record High Impact on Power Stocks
Share

Summary:

India’s power demand rose 12.8% year-on-year to a record August high of 169 BU, while peak demand reached 258 GW. Lower rainfall, weaker hydro generation and tighter coal inventories pushed electricity prices higher, creating opportunities and risks for power-sector companies.

India’s electricity demand witnessed a sharp increase in August, rising 12.8% year-on-year to an all-time August high of around 169 billion units (BU). The surge reflects higher cooling demand amid weaker rainfall conditions and increased power consumption across the country.

Peak power demand also increased by nearly 12% to 258 GW in August compared with 230 GW in the same period last year, indicating stronger electricity usage during peak hours.

The rise in demand came at a time when power prices outside solar generation hours increased significantly. Average market clearing prices during non-solar hours rose to ₹5.3 per unit from ₹4 per unit last year, highlighting tighter supply conditions during certain periods.

Supply Constraints Push Power Prices Higher

The increase in electricity consumption was accompanied by supply-side challenges. Rainfall across India between June 1 and August 26 was 13% below normal, affecting regions such as northwest, central and southern India. During August 6-12, rainfall deficits in these regions stood at 6%, 14% and 29%, respectively.

Lower rainfall affected hydroelectric power generation, which declined by around 9% due to weaker reservoir levels. As of August 30, energy content at 31 reservoir-based hydropower projects stood at around 22 BU, compared with 25 BU a year earlier.

The pressure was also visible in short-term electricity markets. Real-time market volumes increased 10.6% to 5,565 million units (MU) from 5,029 MU, while the average market clearing price increased 30.4% to ₹4.41 per unit.

The Day-Ahead Market price also increased 22% year-on-year to ₹4.88 per unit, indicating stronger demand and tighter availability during certain time periods.

Generation Growth Supports Rising Consumption

Power generation increased to meet higher demand. Total power generation rose around 12.6% to 180 BU in August. Renewable energy generation increased nearly 27%, supported by 16.3 GW of renewable capacity additions between April and July.

Coal-based generation also increased by around 13%, with coal’s share in total generation rising to 63% from 62% a year earlier.

However, coal availability remains a key factor for the sector. Thermal power plants recorded lower coal inventories, with stock levels declining to 29 million tonne as of August 30 from 50 million tonne a year earlier. Stock cover reduced from 17 days to 9 days, while average daily coal requirement increased to 3.10 million tonne during April-August from 2.97 million tonne a year earlier.

What Does Higher Power Demand Mean For Power Stocks?

The increase in electricity demand could support companies involved in power generation, transmission and renewable energy. Higher consumption may benefit large power producers such as NTPC, Tata Power, Adani Power and JSW Energy if they are able to maintain generation efficiency and benefit from improved power demand.

Transmission companies such as Power Grid Corporation of India may also gain from long-term electricity infrastructure expansion, while power exchanges can benefit from higher trading volumes during periods of demand-supply imbalance.

However, higher demand alone does not guarantee better stock performance. Investors will also track fuel availability, coal costs, tariffs, regulatory changes, debt levels, capacity utilisation and payment cycles from distribution companies.
