Canara Bank: Improving Loan Growth and Asset Quality
Canara Bank’s credit growth at approximately 19% YoY for the quarter was higher than the growth in deposits, which was 13%. The gap indicates the bank was lending out more money than it had in deposits.
Asset quality also improved. Gross non-performing assets (GNPA) fell to 1.33% from 2.35% a year ago, and net NPA fell to 0.30% from 0.54%.
Fewer bad loans could ease pressure on future credit costs. However, a faster pace of credit growth relative to deposit mobilisation could raise funding requirements and affect lending margins.
Canara Bank Share Price Today: Stock Jumps After Drop

The stock touched an intraday low of ₹116.71 during Thursday’s trading session. The Nifty PSU Bank index was also under selling pressure.
The stock has a 52-week trading range of ₹116.51 to ₹162.89 as of October 16.
Canara Bank Stock Analysis: What Investors Need to Watch Out For
The numbers for Q2FY27 are a mixed bag, with improved asset quality, credit growth and profitability. Margins were relatively stable despite stronger lending.
One important area is the move to expected credit loss (ECL) provisioning. Under this accounting framework, banks are required to recognise potential loan losses earlier, which could affect future provisions, profitability and regulatory capital.
Mobilisation of deposits will also continue to be key. Maintaining funding costs and liquidity will be critical to support margins as advances outpace deposits.
Conclusion
September quarter results: Canara Bank’s earnings rise, lending rises and NPAs decline. But the negative reaction in the share price suggests that there is concern about more than just headline profit growth. The bank’s financial performance will continue to be evaluated based on future trends in margins, deposit growth and provisioning requirements.
