Summary

Indian equity markets fell on Wednesday as Brent crude rose above $110 per barrel, US Treasury yields remained elevated and India VIX climbed. Nifty Auto and Metal declined, while IT stocks gained, highlighting divergent sector performance amid heightened global uncertainty.

Indian equity markets began Wednesday's session on a positive note, with the benchmark indices extending their gains in early trade. However, the initial optimism faded as selling pressure emerged, pushing the indices sharply lower from their intraday highs. The Nifty, which touched a high of 23,120.90, eventually closed significantly lower from the day’s high.

The Nifty settled at 22,738.45, declining 77.60 points or 0.34%, while the Sensex ended at 73,709.69, down 143.21 points or 0.19%. Banking stocks also came under pressure, with the Bank Nifty declining 0.92% and slipping below the psychologically important 55,000 mark.

Brent Crude Above $110

Brent crude oil price moved above $110 per barrel on Wednesday, recovering from Tuesday's sharp decline as uncertainty surrounding diplomatic negotiations between the US and Iran continued to influence prices.

Oil prices had retreated in the previous session following reports that Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, had met senior Iranian diplomatic and military officials in Tehran to discuss bilateral relations and the progress of negotiations with Washington. However, a diplomat involved in the discussions played down expectations of an imminent agreement, although efforts to end the conflict remain underway.

Meanwhile, supply concerns continued to support crude prices. Escalating tensions involving Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi forces, alongside the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, have heightened fears of further supply disruptions. Against this backdrop, oil prices have risen more than 10% so far this month.

US Treasury Yields Remain Elevated and India VIX Hits Four-Month High

The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note hovered around 5.12% on Wednesday after recovering from the previous session's decline. The renewed strength in crude oil prices added to inflation concerns, reinforcing expectations that interest rates could rise further.

At home, nervousness among market participants was reflected in the sharp rise in the India VIX, which gained more than 6% during the session. The volatility index also climbed to its highest intraday level in four months, indicating increased expectations of near-term market fluctuations.

Sector-Wise Impact

Selling pressure was visible across most sectors, with the Nifty IT index emerging as the only major sectoral index to close in positive territory. The index gained 2.88%, standing out against the weakness elsewhere in the market.

The Nifty Metal and Nifty Auto indices were among the biggest losers, declining 1.71% and 1.54%, respectively. Weakness in the automobile sector was particularly broad, with every constituent of the Nifty Auto index ending in the red. A similar trend was visible in metals, where SAIL was the only constituent to avoid a decline.
