Summary:
Adani Defence & Aerospace has laid the foundation stone for a ₹2,500 crore missile manufacturing complex in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, making it one of the largest private-sector defence investments in India. The integrated facility will manufacture missiles, explosives, propellants, and related components under one roof, supporting India's defence indigenisation efforts. The project is expected to generate around 5,000 jobs and strengthen Adani Group's growing presence in the defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Stocks of Adani Enterprises Ltd. are likely to stay in the limelight amid laying of the foundation stone by its defence unit, Adani Defence & Aerospace, for a ₹2,500 crore missile manufacturing facility in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh. On July 6, stocks of Adani Enterprises Ltd. closed at ₹3,211.90, down 0.01% from ₹3,230, which was its opening price and intra-day high.
This development is indicative of a significant move by the company towards the defence manufacturing space and in line with the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ policy on defence manufacturing.
South Asia's Largest Private-Sector Missile Ecosystem
Adani Defence & Aerospace made it known that the Shivpuri plant will emerge as the largest private missile complex in South Asia, with all aspects of the missile manufacturing value chain coming under one roof for the first time ever in the country’s private industry.
The entire complex will be responsible for handling everything from raw materials to composite propellant manufacturing and manufacture of Trinitrotoluene (TNT), explosive materials and missiles with ready-to-launch systems. As per Adani Defence & Aerospace, this integrated model will help fill a missing link in the defense value chain in India by integrating missile system integration with material manufacture at one location.
In addition, the plant will feature modern manufacturing capabilities, automated production lines and global safety standards so that it can be used to simultaneously support several missile projects for Indian Armed Forces and international partners.
₹2,500 Crore Investment and Employment Generation
Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Defence & Aerospace, addressing the occasion on the laying of the foundation stone of the complex stated that the company would spend ₹2,500 crore in the coming three years to set up the latest facility.
It is estimated to create 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities for skilled workers along with providing opportunities for doing business for over 50 MSMEs forming a specialized defence value chain.
Strengthening Existing Defence Operations
The Shivpuri factory will be a boon for Adani Defence Industries since it already has an existing manufacturing facility in Gwalior where it manufactures pistols, carbines, assault rifles, and light machine guns for the Indian Armed Forces.
Referring to the development taking place at its Gwalior plant, Jeet Adani mentioned that his firm's Light Machine Gun (LMG) program has provided more than 2,000 units to the armed forces within 11 months of their expected delivery date. Adani stated that both these plants would act as twin centres of defence innovations in the state of Madhya Pradesh, developing indigenous defence systems in India.
Part of Larger Investment Plans in Madhya Pradesh
The manufacturing of the missile is just one of many investment plans of the Adani Group in Madhya Pradesh. At the Global Investors' Summit held in Bhopal in the previous year, the chairman, Gautam Adani, mentioned investments of ₹1.10 lakh crore in the areas of hydro pumped storage, cement, mining, smart meters, and thermal power projects. The plan was for the creation of 1.2 lakh jobs by the year 2030.
Jeet Adani further explained that the Adani Group has already spent over ₹4,000 crore in its two cement plants at Ametha and Kymor located in Katni district. Currently, Adani Power provides 1,200 MW of electricity to Madhya Pradesh, apart from an additional 5,600 MW being developed. In addition, the group is working on wind energy projects in Dhar, Ratlam, and Ujjain. Moreover, there is a planned cement plant in Ujjain and also a recent project worth ₹1,060 crore for a cement plant in Guna.
Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav said that the investment would boost the position of the state as a manufacturing hub, thereby making India strong in its defence system.
