Summary:
Vedanta faces a reported ₹5,600 crore bauxite demand from Odisha Mining Corporation after an Orissa High Court ruling. The company has approached the Supreme Court for relief, with investors tracking the payment deadline, legal outcome and potential impact on aluminium raw-material costs.
Why Is Vedanta Facing a ₹5,600 Crore Bauxite Demand?
Why is Vedanta facing a ₹5,600 crore demand? Vedanta Ltd is facing a demand of about ₹5,600 Crore from Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) after the Orissa High Court rejected its plea to continue an older bauxite pricing arrangement. The development could have implications for Vedanta’s raw-material costs and the economics of its aluminium operations in Odisha.
The demand is reportedly payable by October 31, 2026, while Vedanta has approached the Supreme Court seeking relief against the High Court order.

What Is the ₹5,600 Crore Bauxite Pricing Dispute About?
The dispute dates back to an October 2004 agreement between Vedanta and OMC. Under the arrangement, OMC was to supply around 150 mn tonnes of bauxite to Vedanta, with pricing linked to the cost of production, royalty and other statutory charges.
Vedanta later sought enforcement of this pricing arrangement, but the Orissa High Court dismissed the petition. The court held that the company could not rely on agreements that had been terminated and had become unworkable following changes in mining law.
Following the ruling, OMC issued a demand and intimation letter for about ₹5,600 Crore.

Why Bauxite Pricing Matters for Vedanta
Bauxite is the key raw material used to produce alumina, which is subsequently processed into aluminium. Any sustained increase in bauxite acquisition costs can therefore flow through to alumina and aluminium production costs.
Vedanta has a large presence in the aluminium value chain, including its Lanjigarh alumina refinery and aluminium operations at Jharsuguda and BALCO.
The ₹5,600 Crore demand is significant when compared with the scale of Vedanta’s earnings, although it is not directly comparable with annual profit because the timing, accounting treatment and final legal liability remain subject to the ongoing dispute.
Vedanta reported record FY26 consolidated revenue of ₹1,74,075 Crore, +15% YoY, while EBITDA increased 29% YoY to ₹55,976 Crore. PAT rose 22% YoY to ₹25,096 Crore.
Aluminium Business Delivered Record Output in FY26
Vedanta’s aluminium operations also recorded strong production growth during FY26.
The company produced 2.9 mn tonnes of alumina, an increase of 48% YoY, while aluminium production reached a record 2.46 mn tonnes. Its annual hot metal cost declined to $1,752 per tonne, the lowest level in five years.
Its Lanjigarh refinery ended FY26 with an alumina production run rate close to 4 mn tonnes per annum, highlighting the importance of securing competitive bauxite supplies for future operations.
The legal dispute therefore comes at a time when Vedanta has been expanding production and increasing backward integration within its aluminium business.
Supreme Court Proceedings Become the Next Trigger
The immediate focus now shifts to proceedings before the Supreme Court. The High Court ruling removed the interim protection available to Vedanta and opened the way for OMC to proceed in accordance with applicable law, including demands based on the prevailing pricing methodology.
Until the legal process progresses further, the final financial impact remains uncertain.
For investors, the key issues to track are whether the ₹5,600 Crore demand is stayed, reduced or upheld, and whether the eventual pricing mechanism materially increases Vedanta’s long-term bauxite sourcing costs. Given the scale of its aluminium business, any permanent change in raw-material economics could influence future margins even as production volumes remain strong.
