Hyundai Motor India Limited (NSE: HYUNDAI, BSE: 544274) reported a 23.9% YoY decline in consolidated net profit to ₹1,196.16 crore in Q2FY27, despite achieving its highest ever quarterly vehicle sales and crossing ₹20,000 crore in quarterly revenue for the first time. Higher raw material costs weighed on profitability, even as domestic sales and exports improved. Meanwhile, Hyundai shares surged more than 5% in early trade on October 29, 2026, supported by record sales volumes and upcoming vehicle launches.

Hyundai's consolidated revenue from operations increased 18.5% YoY to ₹20,696.06 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with ₹17,460.82 crore in Q2FY26.
However, consolidated net profit declined 23.9% to ₹1,196.16 crore from ₹1,572.26 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
EBITDA fell 18.7% YoY to ₹1,974.48 crore, while EBITDA margin contracted by 440 basis points to 9.5% from 13.9%.
| Financial Metric | Q2FY27 | Q2FY26 | YoY Change |
| Revenue from operations | ₹20,696 crore | ₹17,461 crore | +18.5% |
| EBITDA | ₹1,974 crore | ₹2,429 crore | -18.7% |
| EBITDA margin | 9.5% | 13.9% | -440 bps |
| Consolidated net profit | ₹1,196 crore | ₹1,572 crore | -23.9% |
Despite the decline in annual profitability, Hyundai recorded a sequential improvement in financial performance. Revenue increased approximately 26.7% QoQ, while net profit rose 34.6% compared with Q1FY27.
EBITDA margin also improved marginally from 9.3% in Q1FY27 to 9.5% in Q2FY27, supported by higher operating leverage, an improved product mix and cost reduction initiatives.
Why Hyundai's Profit Declined Despite Higher Sales
Rising commodity costs remained a major challenge for Hyundai during Q2FY27.
Total expenses increased approximately 24% YoY to ₹19,302.18 crore from ₹15,566.07 crore, outpacing the company's revenue growth of 18.5%.
Higher costs of steel, aluminium and other vehicle components affected operating profitability. Increased employee expenses also added to costs following the commencement of operations at the Pune manufacturing facility.
As a result, despite revenue increasing nearly 19%, EBITDA declined approximately 19%, reflecting the impact of rising manufacturing expenses.
For H1FY27, consolidated revenue from operations increased 9.3% YoY to ₹37,030.69 crore. However, net profit declined 29.1% to ₹2,084.79 crore from ₹2,941.49 crore in H1FY26.
The divergence between revenue and profit highlights the continuing impact of cost pressures on the company's earnings.
Record Vehicle Sales and New Launches Support Growth
Hyundai reported its highest ever quarterly vehicle sales of 2,19,072 units during Q2FY27, representing growth of 15% YoY and 23% QoQ.
Domestic sales volumes increased 19% YoY and QoQ, while exports grew 4% YoY and 38% sequentially.
The company also recorded its highest rural penetration of 26.6%, while CNG vehicles accounted for a record 19.1% of quarterly sales.
Hyundai launched its BAYON SUV in India on October 26, 2026, with an introductory starting price of ₹9,99,900. The new model expands the company's SUV portfolio and forms part of its ongoing product expansion strategy.
Additionally, Hyundai plans to introduce a dedicated mass market electric vehicle in Q4FY27, strengthening its presence in India's growing EV segment.
Higher domestic demand, improving exports and new vehicle launches could support sales growth in the coming quarters. However, competition remains intense across India's SUV and electric vehicle markets.
Why Hyundai Shares Jumped Despite Weak Earnings
Hyundai shares rose more than 5% in early trading on October 29, 2026, despite reporting a sharp decline in quarterly profits.
The stock gained approximately 5.4% to ₹1,968.50 from its previous closing price of ₹1,866.90.
The recovery came amid record quarterly vehicle sales, sequential improvement in EBITDA margin and expectations of higher volumes from upcoming product launches.
Improving exports and the planned introduction of a mass market electric vehicle also provided a favourable backdrop for the stock.
However, despite the rally, Hyundai shares remained approximately 14.8% lower in 2026 at the time of the reported price movement.
The stock's performance reflected a contrast between near term profitability pressures and the company's expanding product portfolio and improving sales momentum.
Conclusion
Hyundai's Q2FY27 performance reflected strong vehicle demand but continued pressure on profitability. The company achieved record quarterly sales of 2,19,072 units and revenue exceeding ₹20,000 crore for the first time, while consolidated net profit declined 23.9% YoY.
Higher commodity costs and operating expenses reduced EBITDA margin by 440 basis points, although sequential profitability showed signs of improvement.
Going forward, commodity price movements, domestic demand, export growth and the performance of new models such as BAYON will remain important factors in determining whether Hyundai can sustain revenue growth while improving operating margins.
