SIP Investments Touch Record ₹32,490 Crore

Strong SIP contributions and increasing participation of individual investors.

SIP inflows climbed to an all-time high of ₹32,490 crore in September 2026 against ₹32,297 crore in the previous month, marking a marginal month-on-month (MoM) growth of 0.6 per cent, AMFI said.

Equity mutual funds registered a net inflow of ₹38,306.55 crore in September, up 30.61 per cent from ₹29,328.62 crore in August.

Equity funds, with inflows of ₹9,038.57 crore into small-cap funds and ₹7,834.84 crore into mid-cap funds.

However, the total assets under management (AUM) of the industry dipped to ₹82.64 lakh crore against ₹87.08 lakh crore in August mainly on account of market movement and redemption from debt schemes.

The number of mutual fund folios stood at 28.62 crore at the end of September.

Why are retail investors flocking to mutual funds?

There are a number of factors supporting increased participation by individual investors.

Investors have been made comfortable to keep investing in a corrective market by their regular contributions through SIPs. Simplified onboarding, wider access to mutual funds and digital investment platforms are also helping participation.

The industry has expanded its reach further with higher investments in tier-II and tier-III cities.

Retail investors typically allocate a higher proportion of funds to equity, hybrid and passive schemes.

However, institutions have more exposure to liquid and debt mutual funds. Their allocations are also affected by short term cash requirements and taxation and yields available from other fixed income instruments.

In September 2026, the institutional share fell, as debt mutual funds saw net outflows of about ₹1.83 lakh crore.

Will AMC stock get a boost from more retail investor participation?

Listed asset management companies (AMCs) such as HDFC AMC (NSE: HDFCAMC, BSE: 541729), Nippon Life AMC (NSE: NAM-INDIA, BSE: 540767) and Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC (NSE: ABSLAMC, BSE: 543374) need to increase retail participation.

Sustained inflows at a higher level can be supportive of growth in AUM and management fee revenue. Revenue is also dependent on market valuations, scheme mix and fee structures.

There is no specific share price movement that can be directly attributed to the latest investor ownership data.

The September numbers continue to show the trend of individual participation in India’s mutual fund industry. The future trend will depend on SIP contributions, market performance and institutional investment activity.
