Summary:
BSE will replace Wipro in the Nifty 50 from September 30, 2026, following a major NSE index reshuffle. BSE’s higher average free-float market capitalisation helped it qualify, while TVS Motor and Divi’s Laboratories missed the inclusion criteria. The Nifty 500 will also add 27 stocks and remove 27 companies. The changes are expected to increase BSE’s visibility among institutional investors and reshape index-linked flows.
The reshuffling of Nifty 50 and Nifty 500 indices is being planned by NSE Indices, which is conducted during their review process. Wipro Ltd will be replaced by BSE Ltd for Nifty 50 index, whereas 27 stocks have been added to Nifty 500 and 27 companies have been removed. These changes will come into effect from September 30, 2026.
BSE to Replace Wipro in Nifty 50
BSE will join the Nifty 50, taking the place of Wipro considering their average free-float market capitalisation for six months. The average free-float market capitalisation of BSE stood at ₹1,40,879 crore, much higher than Wipro's ₹55,930 crore.
According to the NSE Indices, BSE qualifies for being included as its average free-float market capitalisation is at least 1.5 times the free-float market capitalisation of the smallest Nifty 50 company being removed from the index. The Nifty 50 consists of 50 large companies in terms of average free-float market capitalisation for the last six months.
Why BSE Surged and Wipro Fell
The sharp rally in the value of BSE helped its inclusion in the benchmark index. Shares of BSE were up about 37% during the year 2026 until August 10. Its inclusion in the benchmark index would help in increasing visibility for the stock among institutional investors.
Wipro is the other stock that is under stress. The stock is down by 1.1% on August 10 and has lost about 29.5% during the year 2026. Issues related to artificial intelligence have been causing concern in this sector.
Why TVS Motor and Divi's Laboratories Did Not Enter Nifty 50
Next in line, TVS Motor Company and Divi's Laboratories were the two firms which had met the criteria with their average free-float market capitalisation figures of ₹84,566 crore and ₹82,930 crore, respectively.
However, TVS Motor Company and Divi's Laboratories did not make the list since the average free-float market capitalisation of the two lowest Nifty 50 constituents after the exclusion of Wipro was less than the minimum 1.5 times requirement. The two firms had average figures of ₹65,666 crore and ₹73,054 crore, respectively.
