On Friday, September 5, Indian equity benchmark indices closed on a mixed note, with Nifty 50 ending with modest gains, while Sensex ended 7.25 points down. The Nifty 50 index recovered over 100 points from the day’s low.
At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 ended slightly up by 6.70 points, or 0.03%, at 24,741. The Sensex slipped by 7.25 points, or 0.01%, to 80,710.76. On the weekly basis, the benchmark Nifty 50 index closed 1.29% higher, while the Sensex ended 1.13% higher.
Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty Auto index extended gains for the third day in a row on GST reform, as a result for the week it jumped over 5%. The Nifty IT index dropped 1.44%.
Nifty FMCG stocks, which had jumped 2.7% over the past five sessions, fell 1.42% on Friday. Index constituent ITC slipped over 2%.
On the sectoral front, 8 of the 11 key sectoral indices ended in positive territory. Meanwhile, broader indices like Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 ended in the green.

Nifty Auto index surged by 1.25%, emerging as the top sectoral gainer, extending its rally for the 3rd consecutive day. The Nifty Auto index jumped 5.45% this week. All 15 constituents of the Nifty Auto index set for the best week since May 2025, led by Mahindra & Mahindra. On the flip side, Nifty IT declined by 1.44%, with all of its constituents ending in the red. The fall was triggered by an unconfirmed report that US President Donald Trump may impose tariffs on the IT industry.

The broader market indices ended in green on Friday, September 5. The Mid-cap 100 index ended up by 0.20%, and the Small-cap 100 index closed higher by 0.19%.
As of September 5, 2025, the market breadth was tilted towards advancing stocks. Out of 3,121 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,644 advanced, 1,370 declined, and 107 remained unchanged.
A total of 71 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 49 hit their 52-week lows. Additionally, 99 stocks were locked in their upper circuits, whereas 51 stocks were in lower circuits.
