Summary:
National Stock Exchange of India and BSE Limited will remain closed on May 28 for Bakri Id, while MCX will resume trading in the evening session. The next market holiday falls on June 26 for Muharram.
Indian stock markets will remain closed on Thursday, May 28, 2026, on account of Bakri Id (Eid-ul-Adha), according to the official holiday calendar issued by the National Stock Exchange of India and BSE Limited. Trading across equity, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, and SLB segments will remain suspended for the day.
The clarification comes amid confusion among investors regarding whether markets would remain open on May 27 or May 28 for the Islamic festival. As per the updated holiday schedule released by NSE, exchanges are functioning normally on May 27, while the official trading holiday is scheduled for May 28.
Bakri Id is observed annually on the 10th day of Zil Hajj, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. In India, the festival will be celebrated on May 28 this year, while countries such as Saudi Arabia are expected to observe it a day earlier on May 27.
An exchange holiday means trading activity remains completely closed across segments on NSE and BSE. A settlement holiday, however, impacts only the clearing and settlement process while trading may continue normally.
There are certain occasions in the market calendar where exchanges remain operational but settlement activity stays closed. In such cases, investors can trade shares, but pay-in and pay-out settlements get adjusted to the next working day.
In 2026, one such settlement holiday falls on a Friday, creating a longer settlement cycle due to the weekend gap. Traders and investors usually monitor these dates closely as they can impact fund transfers, margin obligations and delivery schedules.
Market participants also keep a close watch when an exchange holiday coincides with derivatives expiry day. If a scheduled market holiday falls on the regular weekly or monthly expiry session, expiry gets preponed to the previous trading day. This adjustment is especially significant for F&O traders managing open positions.
The Bakri Id holiday will result in another shortened trading week for Indian equities. Earlier this month, stock exchanges were also shut on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day.
According to the 2026 stock market holiday calendar, Indian exchanges will observe a total of 16 holidays during the year. Out of these, eight holidays have already passed, while seven more trading holidays remain after the Bakri Id closure.
The next stock market holiday after May 28 will fall on June 26 for Muharram. Markets will subsequently remain closed on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi, October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, October 20 for Dussehra, November 10 for Diwali Balipratipada, November 24 for Guru Nanak Jayanti, and December 25 for Christmas.
Trading rules for commodity markets differ slightly from equity markets. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India will remain closed during the morning session on May 28 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, trading will resume during the evening session between 5:00 PM and 11:30 PM/11:55 PM.
Meanwhile, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited will remain shut for both trading sessions on the same day.
According to MCX’s annual trading calendar, the commodity exchange also has 16 trading holidays in 2026, including partial-day and full-day closures.
In 2026, four important holidays fall on weekends and therefore will not lead to additional weekday market closures. These include Mahashivratri on February 15 and Eid-Ul-Fitr on March 21, both falling on Sundays, along with Independence Day on August 15, which falls on a Saturday.
Diwali Laxmi Pujan will also fall on Sunday, November 8. Despite this, exchanges will conduct the customary Muhurat Trading session on the same day. The timings for the special one-hour session will be announced closer to the festival.
