Summary:

India's GST collections rose 22.9% year on year to ₹2.31 lakh crore in October 2026, marking the strongest annual growth in more than four years. Import revenue climbed 42.2%, while domestic collections increased 15.8%; April–October collections reached ₹14.78 lakh crore.

India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections grew 22.9% on-year to ₹2,31,290 crore in October 2026, the fastest annual growth in more than four years. The increase was largely driven by higher tax revenues from imports and double-digit growth in domestic collections. The latest figures also represented the fourth month in a row where GST revenue remained above ₹2 lakh crore.

October GST collections show robust growth

Provisional government data released on Nov 1 showed that GST revenue for October 2026 stood at ₹2,31,290 crore against an adjusted ₹1,88,125 crore in October 2025.

The highest collection in FY27 was in April at Rs 2,42,702 crore, with October being the second best. The YoY increase of 22.9% was also significantly higher than the 14.7% rise in September, suggesting a rapid acceleration in tax collections.

The improvement was in the demand of the festive season and increased commercial activity. But a big chunk of that rise was generated by import-related revenues, so it’s important to distinguish between domestic consumption and overseas purchases.

Imports Revenue Up 42.2%, Domestic Collections Up 15.8%

GST collections from imports grew 42.2% year-on-year to ₹72,246 crore against ₹50,796 crore a year ago. Domestic GST collections grew 15.8% to ₹1,59,044 crore.

That difference is important. Faster growth in import revenues can also reflect changes in import volumes, prices of commodities and taxable value of goods entering India and not just domestic demand.

The key numbers for October are:

GST ComponentOctober 2026
Gross GST collection₹2,31,290 crore
YoY growth+22.9%
Domestic GST collection₹1,59,044 crore
Domestic revenue growth+15.8%
GST revenue from imports₹72,246 crore
Import revenue growth+42.2%
Net GST revenue₹2,03,356 cr
GST refunds₹27,934 cr

Net GST collections grew 25.6% YoY, ahead of gross revenues, with refunds rising a relatively modest 6.5%.

GST Revenue Crosses ₹14.77 Lakh Cr in FY27

Government tax receipts also rose steadily during the April-October period.

For the first seven months of FY27, cumulative gross GST collections stood at ₹14,77,569 crore as against ₹13,05,213 crore in the corresponding period of FY26, a growth of 13.2%.

Net collections rose 12.6% to ₹12,69,486 crore in April-October.

Monthly trend shows the acceleration in tax revenue growth through the financial year. Collections rose 13.9% in June, 15.4% in July, 14.3% in August and 14.7% in September before accelerating to 22.9% in October.

Maharashtra tops states in GST collection

Maharashtra continued to be the largest contributor with domestic GST collections of ₹35,150 crore, up 13% YoY.

Karnataka followed with ₹15,922 crore, Gujarat collected ₹13,516 crore. Uttar Pradesh registered higher growth at 24 per cent and took its collections to ₹10,235 crore.

The state-wise numbers indicate that despite the steep rise at the national level, revenue growth continues to be uneven.

What does this mean for the economy and the markets?

Higher GST collections will help government finances through better tax receipts and more fiscal flexibility for infrastructure and other spending.

For equity markets, stronger domestic collections are a useful signal of business activity, especially in consumption-linked sectors.

But the 42.2% increase in import revenue is worth noting. Higher import prices and values of transactions can lead to higher tax receipts, without a corresponding increase in domestic consumption.

The next few months will show whether October's surge in growth is an indication of a continued improvement in economic activity or a temporary lift from imports and seasonal demand.
