Summary:
SEBI has revised the Closing Auction Session framework, retaining 30-minute VWAP for expiring derivatives settlement while changing auction timings and trading rules. Most changes take effect December 7, 2026, with selected order-transfer provisions starting February 8, 2027.
On Friday, October 16, 2026, capital market stocks like BSE Ltd, National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Nuvama Wealth Management Ltd were in the limelight after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) revised its Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework. The changes relate to trading timings, closing-price determination and settlement of expiring Futures & Options (F&O) contracts. Most provisions will become effective on December 7, 2026.
What has SEBI changed in the Closing Auction Session framework?
SEBI has kept a Closing Auction Session of 10 minutes from 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM for determination of closing prices of eligible cash-market securities.
The major revision is in the F&O settlement. Instead of the closing auction price, expiring derivative contracts will be settled using the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) calculated in the last 30 minutes of continuous trading.
Therefore, the settlement price will be determined by the prices and volumes traded between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM, reducing dependence on price movements during the closing auction.
The new structure also changes the treatment of outstanding orders and severs the link between the closing auction and derivative settlement.

Capital Market Stocks Response & BSE Share Price
The market reaction on October 16 was mixed BSE shares were trading 2.36% lower at ₹3,347. The Nifty Capital Markets index was down about 1.34% at around 11:00 AM.
Meanwhile, Nuvama Wealth traded in positive territory. Elsewhere, other companies in the capital markets sector moved in mixed fashion, suggesting the regulatory announcement was not a one-size-fits-all across the sector.
Nuvama Wealth Share Price Today & Sector Impact
Nuvama Wealth Management stock was trading at around ₹1,721.10, up 0.23% in late-morning trade on October 16. The stock moved between ₹1,698 and ₹1,743.30 in the session.
Derivatives activity contributes to transaction volumes and associated revenue, making the revised settlement mechanism relevant to exchanges, clearing corporations and trading intermediaries.
But the rule does not directly alter brokerage fees or promise increased trading volume. The financial impact will be dependent on market participation, transaction activity and implementation costs.
Why the Revised CAS Framework Is Important
The old framework tied the settlement of expiring derivatives to closing auction prices, raising concerns about the potential for volatile price movements in a short trading window.
VWAP spreads the settlement calculation over 30 minutes of normal trading. For example, if a stock trades at different prices during the 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM period, its settlement reference will reflect the volume traded at each price, not a single closing auction price.
The official closing price for eligible cash-market securities shall continue to be the closing auction price. This difference is important: the cash market closing price and the derivatives expiry settlement price can differ.
Outlook
SEBI’s new CAS framework separates cash market closing-price discovery and derivatives expiry settlement. The December 7 implementation will be critical for exchanges, traders and market intermediaries as they adapt to the new timings and settlement process.
The long-term implications for BSE, NSE and Nuvama Wealth will be dictated by actual trading volumes, operational changes and market participation.
