Sanjeev Nautiyal’s exit and transition plan
Nautiyal submitted his request for early retirement through an email on August 31, citing health issues. He stepped down as MD and CEO and key managerial personnel effective September 1, but will remain on leave during the three month notice period and formally retire on November 30.
Nautiyal took charge as the CEO of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank on July 1, 2024, for a three year term. Before joining Ujjivan, he had more than three decades of banking experience, including senior roles at State Bank of India, where he served as Deputy Managing Director overseeing financial inclusion and micro markets. He also served as Managing Director and CEO of SBI Life Insurance.
During his tenure at Ujjivan, the bank strengthened several areas including expansion of its secured loan portfolio, growth in deposits, improvement in digital and analytics capabilities and strengthening of risk management and internal control systems.
Carol Furtado appointed interim CEO
The board appointed Executive Director Carol Furtado as the interim CEO, subject to regulatory approval. Furtado has been associated with Ujjivan since its early years and was part of the leadership team that helped establish the bank.
With more than three decades of experience across business strategy, operations, institutional functions and people management, Furtado is expected to ensure continuity during the leadership transition.
The bank stated that its leadership development initiatives and succession planning framework would help manage the transition smoothly while addressing operational requirements.
Focus shifts to universal bank transition
Ujjivan Small Finance Bank has been working towards upgrading itself from a small finance bank to a universal bank. A successful transition would allow the lender to expand its product offerings and operate under a broader banking framework.
While the immediate market reaction reflected concerns around leadership uncertainty, the bank’s strong internal succession process and experienced interim leadership could help maintain stability. The key focus now remains on the appointment of a permanent CEO and the bank’s progress towards achieving its long term growth objectives.
