Summary:
Equitas Small Finance Bank shares fell sharply after MD & CEO P N Vasudevan resigned amid perceived conflict-of-interest concerns. The decline came despite record Q2FY27 profit of ₹218 crore, highlighting investor focus on leadership continuity, governance and future business strategy.
Equitas Small Finance Bank Ltd (NSE: EQUITASBNK) faced a sharp sell-off on October 29, 2026, after its Managing Director & CEO, P N Vasudevan, resigned citing a perceived conflict of interest. The stock crashed intraday by 20% to ₹52.11 before rebounding to close at ₹56.99, down 12.39%. This is even as the bank reported its highest-ever quarterly profit in Q2FY27.
Why did Equitas Small Finance Bank CEO resign?
Equitas’s founder P N Vasudevan, who led the lender from its microfinance beginnings in 2007 to a small finance bank in 2016, resigned on October 29.
The decision came in the wake of concerns over his daughter’s association with Unico Housing Finance, a non-banking financial company (NBFC) that got its Reserve Bank of India (RBI) licence in 2023.
"The family relationship has been disclosed to the board of the bank and RBI," the resignation letter stated. The letter also said there were no lending transactions between Equitas and the NBFC.
The only financial transaction reported was a short term deposit made some two and a half years ago, which was repaid on maturity.
The resignation seems to be tied to a reported governance dispute, not to any established regulatory breach.
Why Equitas SFB Share Price Crashed?
Heavy selling followed the surprise news of new leadership, although the quarterly earnings were solid.
Shares slumped to an intraday low of ₹52.11 on October 29 from the previous close of ₹65.05, hitting the 20% lower circuit. Finally, the stock ended at ₹56.99.
Selling pressure was seen continuing on Oct. 30, Shares were trading around ₹47.26, down 17.07% at around 10:45 AM, taking the cumulative decline in two sessions to around 27.34%.
The steep sell-off was a reflection of uncertainty on the transition of leadership, the succession planning and how that may impact the bank’s operating strategy.
Equitas SFB Q2FY27 Results: Profit Nearly 10 Times Higher
The resignation followed strong September-quarter performance.
| Particulars | Q2FY27 | Performance |
| Net Profit | ₹218 crore | Almost 10x YoY |
| Net interest income | ₹1,313 crore | +32% YoY |
| Gross advances | ₹50,669 crore | +30% YoY |
| Total deposits | ₹52,483 crore | +19% YoY |
| Gross NPA Ratio | 2.29% | Improved YoY |
| Net Interest Margin | 6.69% | -55 bps QoQ |
The bank’s business crossed ₹1 lakh crore in the September quarter. Higher lending activity, deposit growth and lower credit costs underpinned profitability.
But a sequential decline in net interest margin indicated ongoing pressure on lending spreads.
Leadership Transition and Outlook
The board of the bank has requested Vasudevan to continue as MD & CEO until his successor takes over.
The Nomination and Remuneration Committee will consider internal and external candidates. The last appointment would be subject to the RBI's approval.
The leadership change comes on the back of strong business growth and improving asset quality at the bank.
Equitas SFB’s near-term performance will be driven by leadership continuity, deposit mobilisation, credit quality and lending margins. The latest financial results point to an improved operating performance, but the steep correction in share prices shows how governance issues and uncertainty about management can affect investor sentiment, irrespective of earnings growth.
