Global Markets Gain on US Midterm Results as Dollar Drops
Share

Summary:

The US dollar weakened after Democrats gained control of both congressional chambers in the 2026 midterm elections, supporting global equities. Falling crude oil prices and evolving economic expectations influenced currency movements, while investors continued monitoring US employment data and Federal Reserve policy.

The US dollar fell against major world currencies on November 4, 2026, after the Democratic Party won control of both houses of Congress in midterm elections. That outcome supported global equities and eased political uncertainty, while a sharp fall in the price of crude oil added to moves in currency and bond markets.

Dollar Index Declines Following Election Results

The US dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major international currencies, fell about 0.32% to 101.51 during Wednesday’s session.

The move put the index on track for its biggest daily percentage drop in about three weeks.

The euro rose 0.38% to around $1.1236 and the British pound was up about 0.43% to $1.346.

The dollar edged down against the Japanese yen, trading around ¥158.60.

The moves in the currencies followed a general rally in American equities after the election result.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 3.03 percent and the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rose 1.58 percent.

The simultaneous rise in equities and fall in the dollar reflected a change in investor positioning after the election results.

Why did the dollar lose steam?

The election results created a divided government, with Democrats in control of Congress and President Donald Trump still in the White House.

This reduced uncertainty about the political outcome and led market focus to future government policies.

A major development has occurred in the energy market.

Brent crude fell 8.7% to $94.62 a barrel as markets weighed the possibility that the election could increase pressure for talks involving Iran.

Lower crude prices can help relieve inflationary pressure by reducing energy costs for homes and businesses.

This is important for currencies because inflation drives central bank decisions and expectations on interest rates.

But lower oil prices don't necessarily translate into lower American interest rates.

The Federal Reserve will continue to make its decisions based on inflation, employment and the broader economy.

US Economic Data Still Matter

Investors also digested new American economic data alongside the election results.

Private-sector employment rose 86,000 jobs in October, according to the ADP National Employment Report.

The Institute for Supply Management’s services purchasing managers’ index slipped to 54.5 in October from 54.9 in September.

The index fell but remained above 50, reflecting continued expansion in service sector activity.

The US economy continues to show resilience, with the combination of employment growth and expanding services activity.

So the Fed’s interest rate outlook continues to be an important factor for the dollar.

Treasury bond yields, inflation expectations and economic data also influence currency movements, regardless of political developments.

What Does Weaker Dollar Mean for India?

A weaker US dollar can impact Indian equities, currency markets and global commodity prices.

Dollar movements are very important for India since commodities like crude oil are priced in dollars internationally.

If both dollar and crude prices move down, it can bring down India's import costs.

A weaker dollar can also help pull capital into emerging markets, but actual investment will depend on valuations, interest rate differentials and broader risk conditions.

Rupee revenue earned by Indian IT and pharma exporters from overseas markets can be impacted by currency fluctuations.

But the rupee's performance also depends on domestic trade flows, foreign investment and the operations of the Reserve Bank of India.

The immediate market reaction to the election outcome is the dollar’s fall. The future direction will be determined by economic data, interest rates, geopolitical developments and the policies of the newly elected US Congress.
