Summary:
Tata Communications plans to invest ₹4,350 crore in a 10,000 km AI-ready fibre network across India. The project aims to connect data centres, cloud platforms and AI hubs, supporting digital infrastructure growth as Q2FY27 revenue rose 9.6% and net profit increased 86.2%.
Tata Communications Ltd announced plans to invest approximately ₹4,350 crore ($400–450 million) to develop a 10,000 km AI-ready fibre network across India. The project, announced on October 26, 2026, aims to connect major data centres, cloud platforms and artificial intelligence hubs. The investment will be spread over three to five years and is expected to be funded through the company's operating cash flows.
Tata Communications Announces India's AI Super Highway
The proposed network, called India's AI Super Highway, will connect major technology hubs through high-speed fibre connectivity.
The project will be developed in three phases, beginning with the Mumbai–Pune–Hyderabad–Chennai corridor. Subsequent phases will cover emerging data centre locations, including Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and Gujarat's GIFT City.
The infrastructure will also connect domestic data centres with international submarine cable landing stations, enabling faster data transfers between India and overseas markets.
Construction is expected to begin in Q4FY27, subject to vendor selection and regulatory approvals. Certain routes could begin contributing to revenue during FY28 and FY29.
AI Network to Support Growing Data Centre Demand
The new infrastructure will support hyperscalers, cloud service providers, AI platforms, global capability centres and large corporate customers.
AI applications require substantial data processing and frequent transfers between computing facilities. High-capacity fibre networks are therefore essential for AI model training, cloud computing and real-time data processing.
Currently, Tata Communications operates a global network spanning more than 5,00,000 km of subsea optical fibre and over 2,00,000 km of terrestrial fibre.
The proposed expansion will strengthen connectivity between emerging data centre clusters across India.
According to Tata Communications, India's data centre-to-data centre connectivity market is estimated to exceed $1 billion in the medium term.
Tata Communications Q2FY27 Profit Surges 86%
The investment announcement follows the company's improved financial performance during the September quarter.
Consolidated revenue increased 9.6% year-on-year (YoY) to ₹6,688 crore in Q2FY27 from ₹6,100 crore in Q2FY26.
Net profit surged 86.2% to ₹341 crore from ₹183 crore, while EBITDA increased 21.2% to ₹1,422 crore.

Why Is Tata Communications Share Price Up?
Tata Communications shares gained more than 2% during trading on October 26, following the announcement of its AI infrastructure investment.
The stock touched an intraday high of ₹1,688.50 on the BSE, rising approximately 2.09% from its previous close of ₹1,653.80. The company had a market capitalisation of approximately ₹47,894 crore.
The positive market response followed expectations of growing demand for AI connectivity infrastructure and the company's improved quarterly earnings.
However, the stock continued trading below several key moving averages, indicating that the broader technical trend remained under pressure.
What Is in Store for Tata Communications?
India's expanding AI and data centre ecosystem could drive higher demand for dedicated high-capacity fibre connectivity.
The proposed 10,000 km network provides Tata Communications with an opportunity to strengthen its presence in the growing data centre connectivity market.
However, future returns will depend on project execution timelines, capital expenditure requirements, regulatory approvals and customer acquisition.
The investment represents a major expansion of the company's digital infrastructure business. Its financial contribution will become clearer as individual network corridors become operational and begin generating revenue.
