Reliance Industries explores aluminium business through coal gasification
Share

Summary:

Reliance Industries is exploring an entry into the aluminium sector through its planned coal gasification project in Andhra Pradesh. The company is also interested in the Karlapat bauxite block in Odisha, potentially linking coal, energy and aluminium production into an integrated industrial business. The move comes as India’s aluminium demand is expected to rise sharply, creating opportunities for new capacity and competition.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) owned by Mukesh Ambani is considering entering into the aluminium business as a part of their strategy to develop new industrial businesses. With their planned coal gasification project in Andhra Pradesh, producing aluminium can help them enhance the commercial viability of the generated fuel.

This follows another large Indian conglomerate announcing an investment of around $11.5 billion to develop a 2 million tonnes per annum aluminium project in Odisha in collaboration with an international investor. If RIL moves ahead with its plans, it would represent another major corporate entry into India’s aluminium sector.

Reliance Eyes Aluminium Business Opportunity Linked To Coal Gasification

Acquiring two coal blocks from the government through auctions, RIL is planning to set up a coal gasification project in Andhra Pradesh. This technology transforms coal into combustible gas, which can be used as a source of power generation or industrial fuel.

In this context, reliance is exploring the prospect of aluminium production in relation to their coal gasification project with the objective to use the generated fuel in a more optimal manner. Further, Reliance is interested in the Karlapat bauxite block in Odisha which serves as a primary material input for aluminium production.

Earlier, Reliance proposed an investment of ₹2.73 lakh crore over 30 years to develop an integrated underground coal gasification complex in Andhra Pradesh. In phases, the project would commence with exploration and pilot testing with the objective to evaluate the commercial viability of the project.

India’s Aluminium Demand Outlook Remains Strong

India’s aluminium industry is currently witnessing the dawn of a new era of growth fueled by infrastructure development, electrification, renewable energy, electric vehicles and the overall increase in manufacturing activity in the country. The demand for aluminium in various spheres is projected to witness a significant uptick in the years to come.

Domestic aluminium consumption in India could witness an increase from around 6 million tonnes in FY26 to nearly 8.5 million tonnes by FY30 and further rise to around 28 million tonnes by FY47. However, the announced capacity additions may not be adequate to meet the demand in the future, thus creating an opening for new entrants in the sector.

Currently, India’s aluminium industry landscape is dominated by some of the leading producers including Vedanta Aluminium, Hindalco Industries and National Aluminium Company Ltd. A potential aluminium venture by RIL could increase the competitive landscape of the industry.

Strategic Diversification Beyond Traditional Sectors

Traditionally, RIL has been diversifying into varied sectors including telecom, retail, energy and digital services amongst others. Their potential aluminium venture exemplifies their effort to build integrated industrial businesses by combining access to raw materials, energy and manufacturing capabilities.

A metals business could provide an additional avenue to utilise the coal gasification output while carving a niche in an industry that is expected to witness long term industrial demand.

Outlook

RIL’s potential entry into the aluminium sector underlines the significance of various metals that are set to gain traction with the infrastructure and manufacturing growth trajectory of India. While the proposal is still at the evaluation stage, leveraging coal resources, gasification technology and aluminium production could represent a significant industrial strategy if executed successfully.
