Summary:

BSE Index Services has launched the BSE Saatvik 100, India's first ethical investing index, designed to help investors gain exposure to companies that align with values-based and responsible investing principles. Derived from the BSE 500, the index includes 100 companies that meet Saatvik guidelines focused on ethics, responsibility, and long-term wealth creation. Financial services hold the highest weightage in the index, with major constituents including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, and Infosys. The index can serve as a benchmark for ETFs, index funds, PMS offerings, and other investment products. The launch reflects growing demand for investment options that combine financial returns with ethical and social considerations.

BSE took the initiative to launch the first Saatvik Index in India — the BSE Saatvik 100 — on 19 June 2026. It monitors the daily performance of 100 stocks from the universe of BSE 500 companies that abide by Saatvik investing principles. The base value of the index is 1,000 and it is reconstituted semi-annually, on 20 June 2005 and 20 December 2005. This will be the first value-based benchmark of its kind in India for investors who wish to invest in companies that embody their values.

What is the BSE Saatvik 100 Index?

The BSE Saatvik 100 Index is the BSE 500 Index constituents that are in line with the Saatvik principles. It is semi-annually reconstituted in June and December each year with a base value of 1,000.

The index has been built and maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of BSE – Asia's oldest stock exchange. It's based on 100 companies which are chosen not only because of their financial strength but also because of their defined philosophical framework. The launch is a sign of a growing trend of investors that want to combine their investments with ethical, cultural and value-based concerns in addition to financial ones.

It is suitable to be used as a benchmark in the case of passive investment products such as ETFs, index funds and for mutual fund scheme benchmarking and PMS strategies. It is the first index in India to institutionalise Saatvik principles as a stock selection criterion.

What is Saatvik Investing?

Meaning of Saatvik Principles

Saatvik Principles means positive, auspicious and noble.
Saatvik is a pure and conscious and harmonious lifestyle that leads to mental clarity, peace and wellbeing in the Hindu philosophy. In the context of investing, it involves investing in companies that are involved in activities that are consistent with those values, excluding industries such as those which brew intoxicating beverages, engage in speculative investing, or are deemed to pose a threat to wellbeing.

How Saatvik Investing Differs from Traditional Investing

Traditional investing measures companies based on just their financials – revenue growth, return on equity, debt ratio, valuation etc. Saatvik investing is a values-based approach to financial analysis. Companies excluded are not necessarily bad businesses, but rather those that don't fit the Saatvik investment philosophy, even if they are big and have a strong financial position.

This distinction matters for investors. The index is not making a judgement about the quality or legality of excluded industries. It is simply defining a universe of companies that fit a specific philosophical framework — the same way a sector ETF defines its universe by industry classification. Investors who resonate with these principles can now access a market benchmark built around them, rather than constructing a portfolio from scratch.

How Does the BSE Saatvik 100 Index Work?

Stock Selection Process

The starting universe is the BSE 500 — one of India's broadest equity benchmarks covering large, mid, and small cap companies. From this universe, companies whose primary business activities fall outside Saatvik principles are excluded. The Wealth Company Ethical Fund, which aligns closely with this framework, excludes businesses associated with alcohol, tobacco, gambling, vulgar entertainment, narcotic substances, leather, meat and poultry, pesticides, insecticides and animal cruelty. The remaining eligible companies are then ranked and the top 100 by defined criteria are included in the index.

Rebalancing and Review

The index reconstitutes twice a year — June and December. At each reconstitution, the constituent list and weightages are reviewed and updated to reflect any changes in the BSE 500 universe and to ensure alignment with the Saatvik methodology remains current.

Sector Representation

The sector composition of the BSE Saatvik 100 Index is dominated by financial services, technology, telecom and industrial companies. This is broadly consistent with the overall BSE 500 composition in these sectors — which naturally qualify under the Saatvik framework given the nature of their business activities. The index maintains diversification across multiple sectors rather than concentrating in any single industry.

Key Sector Weights

Financial services is the dominant sector in the index. The presence of financial services companies in the index is viewed positively, as the Saatvik framework had consciously built flexibility to invest in select financial services businesses, unlike traditional Shariah benchmarks that often restrict exposure to the sector. IT and telecom form the second and third largest sector allocations, followed by industrials — making the overall index tilt toward quality, capital-light businesses with strong governance track records.

Benefits and Limitations of the BSE Saatvik 100 Index

Benefits

Values-based investing with a formal benchmark. Before this index, investors wanting to align their portfolio with Saatvik principles had no standard reference point. The index gives fund managers, PMS providers, and individual investors a transparent, rules-based benchmark to build around.

Diversification across 100 stocks. With 100 constituents spanning financial services, IT, telecom, industrials, and other eligible sectors, the index is not a concentrated niche product. It offers broad market participation within the defined philosophical boundary.

Passive investment potential. Asset management companies may develop ETFs that track the BSE Saatvik 100, allowing investors to gain exposure to the index through stock exchanges. The index can also serve as the underlying benchmark for mutual fund schemes designed around passive investing strategies.

Limitations

Sector concentration in financials. With HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank together accounting for over 17% of the index, financial sector performance has an outsized influence on overall index returns. A banking sector downturn affects this index more than a broadly diversified one.

Smaller investable universe. Starting from 500 stocks and filtering out several industry categories reduces the universe available for selection. This means the index may miss some high-performing companies that operate in excluded sectors — which is a deliberate trade-off, not a flaw, but investors should understand it.

Back-tested performance caveat. The first value date is June 2005 — meaning historical performance data before the June 2026 launch is back-tested, not live. Back-tested returns do not account for real-world factors like liquidity, index impact cost, or the behaviour of fund flows.

The BSE Saatvik 100 and ESG indices both go beyond pure financial criteria — but their frameworks differ. ESG ratings assess environmental impact, governance quality, and social practices across all industries. Saatvik principles define which industries qualify in the first place, then apply financial criteria within that universe. The Nifty 50 applies no values-based filter — it simply tracks the fifty largest and most liquid companies on NSE regardless of industry.

Who Should Consider Investing in the BSE Saatvik 100 Index?

Investors who want market-linked returns from a broad universe of companies and also want those companies to align with Saatvik values. Long-term passive investors who prefer index-based investing over active fund management. Those who have previously found it difficult to build a values-aligned portfolio without a formal benchmark to reference. And investors who are evaluating ETF or index fund products once AMCs launch instruments tracking this index. It is not a product for everyone — but for the investor it is built for, it closes a gap that previously had no structured solution.

Conclusion

The BSE Saatvik 100 is India's first philosophy-driven equity index — 100 companies from the BSE 500, selected through a values-based framework, reconstituted twice yearly. Top holdings include HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance, Infosys, and Bharti Airtel. The index creates a foundation for ETFs, index funds, and PMS benchmarking built around Saatvik principles. For investors seeking market participation within a defined values framework, it provides something that did not exist before — a transparent, rules-based benchmark they can actually invest around.
