The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth ₹2,312 crore with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Transport Aircraft Division, Kanpur, for the acquisition of eight Dornier-228 aircraft along with Operational Role Equipment for the Indian Coast Guard.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on February 12, 2026, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh under the Buy (Indian) procurement category.
The programme is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment by strengthening HAL’s production ecosystem and supporting a large network of MSMEs and ancillary industries. It will also create sustained opportunities in Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) and lifecycle technical support. The contract further reinforces the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India push while strengthening India’s maritime security architecture.
On the same day, the Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh, granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for capital acquisition proposals worth approximately ₹3.60 lakh crore to enhance combat readiness across the armed forces.
For the Indian Air Force, approval was given for the procurement of Multi Role Fighter Aircraft in the Rafale category, combat missiles and the Air-Ship Based High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (AS-HAPS). The MRFA programme will enable air dominance across the spectrum of conflict and significantly strengthen deterrence with long-range offensive strike capability, while most aircraft are planned to be manufactured in India.
The combat missiles will improve stand-off ground attack capability with deep strike precision, and the AS-HAPS platform will support persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance along with electronic intelligence, telecommunication and remote sensing for military operations.
For the Indian Army, AoN was accorded for the procurement of Anti-Tank Mines (Vibhav) and the overhaul of Armoured Recovery Vehicles, T-72 tanks and Infantry Combat Vehicles (BMP-II). The Vibhav mines will act as an anti-tank obstacle system to delay enemy mechanised forces, while overhaul and upgrades will extend equipment service life and maintain operational effectiveness and readiness.
For the Indian Navy, approval was granted for a 04 MW Marine Gas Turbine-based Electric Power Generator under the Make-I category of Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 and the procurement of P8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft. The indigenous marine power generator will reduce dependence on foreign manufacturers and strengthen self-reliance in naval power generation. The P8I aircraft will significantly enhance long-range anti-submarine warfare capability, maritime surveillance and maritime strike operations.
The Indian Coast Guard also received approval for the procurement of Electro-Optical/Infra-Red systems for Dornier aircraft, which will improve maritime surveillance capability and operational effectiveness.
Together, the ₹2,312 crore HAL aircraft contract and ₹3.60 lakh crore acquisition approvals underline a large-scale push toward indigenous manufacturing, defence preparedness and employment generation across the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, further strengthening India’s strategic and maritime security framework.
HAL share price ended 1.13% higher at ₹4,179.00 apiece on the BSE on Thursday after the announcement of Q3 results.
