On Tuesday, July 8, Indian benchmark indices ended in green, with gains in banking stocks led by Kotak Bank and HDFC Bank.

The Nifty 50 index displayed strong gains in the last half hour of trade. At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 ended up by 61.20 points at 25,522.50. The Sensex ended higher by 270.01 points or 0.32% to 83,712.51.

U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed the implementation of tariffs until August 1, while also announcing sharp import duties on several global trade partners. However, reports hint that a trade agreement with India could be nearing.

On the positive side, financials and private banking stocks rallied on Tuesday. Kotak Mahindra Bank led the sectoral uptrend, rising over 3% on the back of robust loan and deposit growth during the June quarter.

Titan saw selling pressure due to weak quarterly sales numbers. 

On the other hand, textile companies recorded gains after the U.S. imposed a 35% tariff on garments from Bangladesh, boosting prospects for Indian exporters.

On the sectoral front, 5 out of 11 key sectors ended in positive territory. Meanwhile, broader indices like the Smallcap and Midcap ended on a negative note, with marginal losses.

Nifty Realty - Top Gainer of the Day

The Nifty Realty index climbed 0.99% on Tuesday. The index recorded its highest intraday gains in the last two weeks, bouncing back from 50-DEMA. Pharma stocks declined by 0.89% after citing concerns over U.S. pricing pressure.

Nifty 50: Top Pullers and Draggers of the Day

The key drivers of the index gains were:

  • Kotak Bank:  +30.74 points
  • HDFC Bank: +17.21 points
  • ICICI Bank: +12.28 points

On the other hand, these stocks weighed on the index:

  • Titan: - 26.28 points
  • Axis Bank: -7.18 points
  • Bajaj Auto: -4.52 points

Broader Markets Negative

The broader market indices ended on a negative note, the Nifty Midcap 100 index ended with a loss of 0.17% and the Nifty Small-cap 100 index closed down by 0.29%. 

Market Breadth

As of July 8, 2025, the Indian stock market witnessed negative market breadth. Out of 3,024 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,352 advanced, 1,564 declined, and 108 remained unchanged. 

A total of 56 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 40 hit their 52-week lows. Additionally, 86 stocks were locked in their upper circuits, whereas 62 stocks were in lower circuits.
