NSE vs BSE: Which exchange has the edge ahead of Q2FY27?
Share

Summary:

NSE retains dominant cash equity and futures market share, while BSE has reported faster revenue and profit growth. Ahead of Q2FY27, investors will watch derivatives turnover, options market share, operating margins and valuation differences between the listed and unlisted exchanges.

India’s two leading stock exchanges enter the Q2FY27 earnings season with very different growth profiles. National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE), which remains unlisted, continues to dominate cash equities and futures, while BSE Ltd has recorded much faster earnings growth as its options franchise gains scale.

For investors comparing the two businesses, the key questions are market share, transaction revenue growth, operating margins, valuation and the sustainability of derivatives volumes.

NSE Retains Dominant Market Position

NSE remains India’s largest exchange by a wide margin. In Q1FY27, it held about 93.05% share of the equity cash market and 99.72% share of equity futures. However, its options market share based on premium turnover has fallen as BSE has expanded. NSE’s options share declined from 96.86% in FY24 to 74.71% in FY26, and further to around 68.48% in Q1FY27.

NSE reported ₹4,560 crore revenue from operations in Q1FY27, up 13.1% YoY, while consolidated total income increased 9.5% to ₹5,252 crore. PAT rose 6.7% YoY to ₹3,120 crore.

Operating EBITDA increased 14.8% to ₹3,594 crore, with the operating EBITDA margin improving to 79%. Transaction charges remained the main revenue source at ₹3,623 crore.

BSE Growth Is Significantly Faster

BSE’s financial growth has been substantially stronger, although from a smaller base.

In Q1FY27, consolidated revenue from operations increased 63.4% YoY to ₹1,566.02 crore, while PAT climbed about 62% to ₹872.66 crore.

The sharp growth has been driven mainly by equity derivatives. BSE’s average daily premium turnover reached ₹29,615 crore in Q1FY27, nearly doubling YoY.

Derivatives Market Share Will Be Crucial in Q2

BSE’s ability to continue taking options market share from NSE will be one of the most closely watched Q2FY27 indicators.

BSE’s options premium turnover share was around 35.2% in FY27 to date by September, though weekly levels have fluctuated following the introduction of the Closing Auction Session. Average daily premium turnover stood around ₹21,300 crore during one September week, with market share at 34.3%.

For NSE, the challenge is maintaining transaction revenue despite losing some options share. Its advantage remains the depth of liquidity across cash equities, futures and several other segments.

Valuation Adds Another Layer

BSE shares were trading around ₹3,257 on October 7, after touching a 52-week high of ₹4,446.80 in May. The company’s market capitalisation stood at roughly ₹1.33 lakh crore.

NSE, meanwhile, is still unlisted. Ahead of its proposed IPO, the unlisted market had indicated a valuation of roughly ₹5 lakh crore. The exchange has received regulatory clearance for its proposed listing process.

That makes the comparison somewhat different from a conventional listed-stock comparison. BSE can be traded directly on the exchange, while NSE exposure remains through the unlisted market until listing.

What Matters in Q2FY27?

NSE offers substantially greater scale, market leadership and diversification, while BSE currently has the stronger earnings growth trajectory.

For Q2FY27, investors will need to track BSE’s derivatives premium turnover, NSE’s transaction revenue, operating margins at both exchanges and any further movement in options market share.

The upcoming results should provide a clearer picture of whether BSE can sustain its rapid gains or whether NSE’s liquidity advantage continues to protect its dominant position.
