Summary:
RBL Bank shares fell over 7% on October 13 despite a 170% year-on-year increase in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹482 crore. Higher provisions, credit costs and questions around sustainable returns remained key concerns alongside strong loan growth.

RBL Bank Share Price Falls Nearly 8% After Q2 Results
RBL Bank shares declined nearly 8% to an intraday low of ₹387.85 on the BSE during Tuesday's morning session, compared with the previous closing price of around ₹417.70.
At approximately 9:27 AM, the stock was trading near ₹396, down 5.7%, even as the broader Sensex gained around 0.5%.
The decline came despite the bank reporting a sharp improvement in quarterly profitability. The stock had recently touched a 52-week high of ₹429.55 on September 23, 2026, making the latest fall particularly noticeable.
The selling pressure suggests that investors were looking beyond headline profit growth and focusing on the quality of earnings, provisioning requirements and the sustainability of margins.
Q2FY27 Net Profit Surges 170% YoY to ₹482 Crore
RBL Bank reported a standalone net profit of ₹481.7 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with ₹179 crore in Q2FY26. This represents an increase of approximately 170% YoY.
Net Interest Income and Operating Profit Increase
Net interest income (NII), which represents the difference between interest earned and interest paid, increased 37.5% YoY to ₹2,131 crore from approximately ₹1,550 crore.
Loan Growth and Asset Quality Improve
The bank also recorded strong loan growth. Total advances rose 42% YoY to approximately ₹1,42,314 crore, supported by expansion in wholesale and secured retail lending.
Net interest margin (NIM) improved to 4.61%, up 48 basis points from the previous quarter.
Asset quality also strengthened during the period. Gross non-performing assets (GNPA) declined to 1.02% from 1.30% in Q1FY27, while net NPA improved to 0.29% from 0.37%.
These figures indicate better operating performance and a reduction in the proportion of stressed loans.
RBL Bank Provisions Rise 53% Year-on-Year
Higher Provisions Raise Concerns Despite Profit Growth
One of the important factors behind the market's cautious reaction was the increase in provisions during the September quarter.
RBL Bank's provisions rose to approximately ₹767 crore in Q2FY27, compared with ₹599 crore in the previous quarter and ₹500 crore in Q2FY26.
This represents an increase of around 28% QoQ and 53% YoY.
Provisions are amounts set aside by banks to cover potential losses from loans that may not be repaid. Higher provisioning reduces the profit available after accounting for possible credit losses.
While RBL Bank reported an improvement in its overall NPA ratios, the increase in provisions indicates that credit costs remain an important area to monitor.
The bank's exposure to unsecured retail lending also remains relevant, as repayment stress in such segments can influence future provisioning requirements.
Loan Growth and Future Margins Remain in Focus
Another important development during the quarter was the bank's mobilisation of foreign currency non-resident deposits.
RBL Bank raised approximately $3.4 bn through FCNR(B) deposits, strengthening its funding base and supporting lending growth. However, these deposits and the associated lending arrangements also influence the composition of the bank's balance sheet.
Although advances increased 42% YoY, growth excluding FCNR(B)-linked lending was approximately 30%.
This distinction matters because the profitability of the additional lending depends on the interest earned relative to funding costs.
Despite the stronger quarterly performance, future margins could face pressure if deposit costs rise or the contribution from lower-yielding lending increases.
The bank's ability to maintain credit quality while expanding its loan book will therefore remain important.
What to Watch After RBL Bank Q2 Results?
RBL Bank's Q2FY27 results showed substantial improvement in profit, interest income and asset quality. However, the sharp decline in its share price indicates that higher provisioning and uncertainty over future profitability remain concerns.
Going forward, changes in credit costs, net interest margins, deposit mobilisation and loan growth will be important indicators of the bank's financial performance.
