Share

Summary:

NSE’s Closing Auction Session (CAS) recorded a record ₹39,718 crore turnover on August 31, driven by heavy trading from MSCI index rebalancing. The surge accounted for 22% of NSE’s total cash market turnover, with over 98,000 investors participating. The event also caused sharp stock-level volatility and significant moves in indices such as Bank Nifty.

The National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) newly introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS) witnessed its biggest test on August 31 as the MSCI index rebalancing triggered an unprecedented surge in trading activity. Turnover in the 15 minute auction window between 3:15 pm and 3:30 pm reached ₹39,718 crore, accounting for 22% of the exchange’s total cash market turnover. More than 98,000 unique investors participated, while NSE commanded 99.9% of the CAS market share.

The surge came as global passive funds adjusted their portfolios to reflect changes in MSCI’s index composition. The August 2026 MSCI review took effect at the close of trading on August 31, making it the first major index rebalancing since CAS was introduced on 3rd August.

Closing auction turnover jumps more than 30 times

The scale of activity was significantly higher than normal. Since CAS was introduced, the session had averaged around 21.57 million shares and ₹1,196 crore in turnover. On August 31, 678.11 million shares changed hands, taking turnover to ₹39,718 crore. This was more than 30 times the average turnover and over 31 times the average volume.

The previous volume record was 33.66 million shares on August 12, while the earlier turnover high stood at ₹1,638 crore on August 18. The latest numbers therefore represent a substantial increase in participation and liquidity in the closing window.

What is CAS and new market timings

Why did MSCI rebalancing create such heavy activity?

Index rebalancing requires passive funds, index funds and exchange traded funds to realign their holdings according to the revised index weights. Because these funds seek to track the index closely, large buy and sell orders are concentrated around the closing price used for index calculations.

The latest MSCI changes included additions such as Laurus Labs, Lenskart Solutions, Adani Energy Solutions and Billionbrains Garage Ventures, while Balkrishna Industries, SBI Cards and Payment Services and Astral were removed from the MSCI India Standard Index. Reliance Industries also saw a reduction in its index weight.

This concentration of orders in a short period resulted in sharp stock specific price movements, particularly in relatively less liquid counters.

Bank Nifty sees sharp closing auction reversal

The impact was particularly visible in the Bank Nifty. The index gained 628.60 points, or 1.09%, during the closing auction and ended at 58,024.95, up 528.65 points, or 0.92%, from the previous close of 57,496.30.

Interestingly, at 3:15 pm, before the auction began, Bank Nifty was down 98.95 points, or 0.17%, at 57,397.35. The final auction therefore transformed a losing session into a gain of nearly 1%.

The Nifty gained 30.15 points, or 0.13%, during CAS before finally closing at 24,080.40, down 95.25 points, or 0.39%, for the day.

Stock level volatility rises sharply

While CAS successfully absorbed the exceptional trading volume, the concentration of orders resulted in significant price movements. Of the 210 stocks traded during the auction, 60 stocks touched the daily 3% price limit. Among them, 47 hit the upper limit and 13 touched the lower limit.

Adani Enterprises witnessed particularly sharp movement and ended 9.8% lower. Adani Group companies collectively lost ₹1.37 lakh crore in market value during the session.

What does the record mean for CAS?

The record turnover provides an important test of NSE’s new closing mechanism. CAS was introduced to improve closing price discovery and help passive funds execute large orders while reducing tracking errors.

The August 31 experience suggests the mechanism can handle substantial institutional flows, although sharp stock level movements highlight the importance of adequate liquidity. The session’s performance could also encourage greater institutional participation in the mechanism over time.

For investors, the key takeaway is that MSCI rebalancing days can create unusually high volatility near market close, and such moves should not automatically be interpreted as changes in a company’s underlying fundamentals.
