Nifty 50 and Sensex Performance today-

  • Nifty 50 closed higher by 15.85 points, or 0.58%, at 25,966.40
  • Sensex jumped 447.55 points, or 0.53%, to settle at 84,481.81

On Friday, December 19, Indian stock market benchmarks ended with strong gains, lifted up by heavyweights such as Reliance and HDFC Bank. 

The Indian equity benchmark indices began the session on a stronger note; bulls regrouped and buying interest emerged, helping the Nifty 50 briefly move past the 25,900 mark. The benchmarks snapped their 4-day losing streak. The Nifty 50 closed higher by 15.85 points, or 0.58%, at 25,966.40, while the Sensex jumped by 447.55 points, or 0.53%, to settle at 84,481.81.

Investor sentiment was also lifted by foreign investors turning buyers in India after an aggressive sell-off earlier this month. However, benchmark indexes set for their third consecutive weekly losses after the rupee slide and foreign outflows earlier this week.

ICICI Prudential Asset Management was listed at a 20.1% premium to its issue price after a $1.2 billion initial public offering earlier this week.

Stock-Specific Highlights

Among individual stocks,

  • Shriram Finance share price jumped 3.71% to a record high after Japan's MUFG announced plans to buy 20% stake.
  • Reliance Industries share price jumped 1.34% after the unit acquires Udhaiyam brand.

Nifty Realty- Top Gainer

On the sectoral front, all 11 sectoral indices closed in positive territory. Nifty Realty index emerged as top gaining sector with gains of 1.67%. The index registered its biggest intraday gains since November 3, 2025. Among the sectoral gainers, pharma stocks advanced 0.86% as the United States defense bill, which includes the US Biosecure Act, is expected to propel global innovator pharma companies to continue diversifying their supply chains away from China. 

Broader Markets End Positive

On Friday, the broader market indices outperformed the frontline gauge by ending the session in green. The Nifty Midcap 100 index and Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 1.2% and 1.34%, respectively.
