On Friday, October 3, Indian equity benchmark indices closed higher for the second consecutive day. Both the Nifty and the Sensex ended this week on a positive note, surging nearly 1%. India’s fear index, India VIX, slipped over 2% to close at 10.

At the close, the Nifty 50 advanced 57.95 points, or 0.23%, to settle at 24,894.25, while the Sensex climbed 223.86 points, or 0.28%, to end at 81,207.17. The indices were lifted by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Bharti Airtel, and Axis Bank with high contributions.

On the sectoral front, 9 out of 11 key major sectors closed in the green. Nifty Metals jumped 1.82% and touched a fresh new record high on supply disruptions at Freeport's Grasberg mine and dollar weakness on firming hopes of an October US rate cut. 

Following this Nifty PSU Bank index soared over 1%, with 11 out of 12 constituents ending in green. On the other hand, Nifty Auto & Nifty Realty indices closed in red with marginal losses of 0.06% and 0.12%, respectively

Meanwhile, broader markets joined the uptrend, with both the Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices ending the session on a positive note, strengthening overall market breadth.

Stock-Specific Highlights

Among individual stocks,

  • Coal India share price fell over 1% after the company reported a YoY drop in September production and lower offtake.
  • Nuvama Wealth share price advanced over 4% on the regulatory nod to set up a mutual fund business.
  • PC Jeweller's share price jumped over 5% after reporting a 63% rise in standalone revenue and a 23% reduction in bank debt in the second quarter, in its business update.

Nifty Metal - Top Gaining Sector

The Nifty Metal index surged 1.82%, hitting an all-time high, with 14 out of 15 constituents ending in positive territory. On the flip side, the Nifty Realty index declined by 0.12%  trading near a 4-month low.

Broader Markets Ended Positive 

The broader market indices ended on a positive note on Friday. The Mid-cap 100 index ended up by 0.83%, recording the sharpest intraday gains since September 1. The Small-cap 100 closed up by 0.69%.

Market Breadth

As of October 3, 2025, the market breadth was in favour of advancing stocks. Out of 3,185 stocks traded on the NSE, 2,142 advanced, 960 declined, and 83 remained unchanged. 

A total of 93 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 52 hit their 52-week lows. Additionally, 132 stocks were locked in their upper circuits, whereas 63 stocks were in lower circuits.
