On Wednesday, September 17, Indian equity benchmark indices closed in positive territory with strong momentum. The Nifty 50 ended at a 2-month high, extending yesterday’s gains.

At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 ended up by 91.15 points, or 0.36%, at 25,330.25. The Sensex jumped up by 313 points, or 0.38%, to 82,693.71 on optimism over US trade talks and expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut later in the day.

PSU Banks jumped 2.61% after M. Nagaraju, Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, clarified that the government has no plan to cut its stake below 51%. All the constituents of Nifty PSU Bank ended in the green with Bank of Maharashtra, PNB and SBI gaining over 3% on September 17, 2025. 

IT companies, which earn a significant share of their revenue from the US, rose 0.65%, being second among the leading sectoral gains.

On the sectoral front, 8 of the 11 key sectoral indices ended in positive territory. Meanwhile, broader indices like Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 ended in the green. 

Stock-Specific Highlights

Among individual stocks,

  • Bharat Electronics share price gains 2.31% on a ₹712 crore order.
  • Mahindra Lifespaces share price advanced 3.65% after announcing redevelopment plans for two housing societies in Mumbai with a development potential of ₹1,700 crore. 
  • Premier Explosives climbed 11.86% after the Telangana Pollution Control Board lifted its closure order on the company's factory in the state.

Nifty PSU Bank - Top Gainer of the Day

The Nifty PSU Bank index rose as much as 12.61% after M. Nagaraju, Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, clarified that the government has no plan to cut its stake below 51%,  with all 10 constituents advancing. On the flip side, Nifty Metal declined by 0.5%, with 11 of 15 of its constituents ending in the red.

Broader Markets Positive

The broader market indices ended in the green on Wednesday. The Mid-cap 100 index ended up by 0.08%, and the Small-cap 100 closed up by 0.68%, extending the winning streak to 9 days. 

Market Breadth

As of September 17, 2025, the market breadth was in favour of advancing stocks. Out of 3,177 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,764 advanced, 1,315 declined, and 98 remained unchanged. 

A total of 84 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 24 hit their 52-week lows. Additionally, 107 stocks were locked in their upper circuits, whereas 52 stocks were in lower circuits.
