On Thursday, December 4, Indian equity benchmark indices closed higher, driven by IT stocks, which gained due to the depreciating local currency and firming bets for a US rate cut next week.

At the close, the Nifty 50 ended up by 47.75 points or 0.18% at 26,033.75, reclaiming the 26,000 mark, while the Sensex advanced by 158.51 points or 0.19% to close at 85,265.32. Both benchmark indices snapped a 4-day losing streak. India's volatility index, India VIX, declined by 3.5%.

The 50-stock Nifty has lost 0.65% in the last four sessions, and the Sensex has shed 0.5%, after hitting fresh all-time high for the first time in 14 months last week.

The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will announce its policy decision on Friday. With growth staying strong and the rupee weakening, investors are unsure whether the central bank will signal any shift in its stance.

On the sectoral front, 7 out of 11 sectoral indices ended in positive territory. Nifty IT index leads benchmarks higher, gaining 1.41% due to depreciating local currency, firming bets for US rate cut next week. Rupee weakens to a new all-time low against the dollar, helping IT companies, which earn a major share of revenue from the US.

Broader markets declined on Thursday, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 ending in negative terrain. 

Stock-Specific Highlights

Among individual stocks,

  • Petronet LNG share price gained 4.54% on signing 15-year binding term sheet for ethane unloading, storage, handling services. 
  • Interglobe Aviation share price fell 2.84% due to flight cancellations over the last few days, marking its fifth straight session of losses.

Nifty IT - Top Gainer

The Nifty IT Index was the top gainer on Thursday, hitting a 5-month high, ending higher by 1.41%  with all of its constituents ending in positive territory. On the flip side, Nifty Media declined by 1.45%.

Nifty 50: Top Pullers and Draggers of the Day

The key drivers of the index gains were:

  • Infosys Ltd: +11.46 points
  • Tata Consultancy Services Ltd: +10.53 points
  • Bharti Airtel Ltd: +10.16 points

On the other hand, these stocks dragged the index:

  • Reliance Industries Ltd: -20.05 points
  • ICICI Bank Ltd: -8.61 points
  • HDFC Bank Ltd: -6.70 points

Broader Markets Ended Lower

The broader market indices ended lower on Thursday. The Nifty Midcap 100 index ended down 0.03% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined by 0.26%.

Market Breadth

As of December 4, 2025, market breadth was in favour of declining stocks. Out of 3,214 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,381 advanced, 1,746 declined, and 87 remained unchanged.
