On Friday, August 22, Indian markets closed lower ahead of the US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium.
At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 ended down by 213.65 points or 0.85%, at 24,870.10. The Sensex slipped by 693.86 points or 0.85% to 81,306.85. Benchmark indices snapped a 6-day winning streak, dragged by index heavyweights Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank.
On a weekly basis, the Nifty 50 ended higher for the second consecutive week, posting a gain of 0.97%, but due to a sharp fall in the final trading session of the week, it resulted in the formation of a long upper shadow.
Financial stocks led the decline with the Nifty Finance index falling 0.96%, where 17 of the 20 constituents closed in the red. The Nifty IT index slipped 0.79% ahead of the Jackson Hole symposium but remained on track for its 2nd positive week in over two months with a 1.74% weekly gain.
On the sectoral front, 2 out of 11 key sectoral indices ended in positive territory. Meanwhile, broader indices like Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 ended lower.

The Nifty Media index advanced 0.95%, emerging as the best-performing sectoral index. Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Saregama India were the top gainers in the pack. On the flip side, the Nifty Metal index slipped 1.25%, making it the worst performer.

The broader market indices ended marginally lower. The Mid-cap 100 index ended down by 0.14% and the Small-cap 100 index closed marginally lower by 0.26%.
As of August 22, 2025, the market breadth was in favour of declining stocks. Out of 3,050 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,178 advanced, 1,762 declined, and 110 remained unchanged.
A total of 74 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 26 hit their 52-week lows. Additionally, 83 stocks were locked in their upper circuits, whereas 40 stocks were in lower circuits.
