Nifty and Sensex Fall on Last Day of May; Nifty Records Third Straight Monthly Gain

Benchmark Indices Close Friday with Modest Losses

The Indian equity benchmark indices concluded the Friday session with modest declines. The Nifty 50 ended lower by 0.22%, while the Sensex closed down by 0.33%. For the week, the Nifty 50 extended its losses for the second consecutive week, falling 0.41%.

Monthly Performance: Nifty 50 Extends Winning Streak

Friday also marked the final trading day of May. For the month, the Nifty 50 advanced by 1.17%, extending its winning streak to three consecutive months.

Nifty Bank Outperforms Frontline Indices

The Nifty Bank index outperformed on Friday, closing 0.37% higher. For the week, it posted a gain of 0.63%, outperforming the broader market.

Sectoral Indices: Nifty PSU Bank Top Gainer 

Most sectoral indices closed in negative territory on Friday, led by Nifty Metal and Nifty IT, both losing over 1%. In contrast, the Nifty PSU Bank index was the top gainer of the day, rising 2.88%.

Broader Indices End Slightly Lower But Show Weekly Gains

Despite ending the day in the red, broader market indices outperformed the frontline indices on Friday. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices declined marginally by 0.06% and 0.03%, respectively. Continued stock-specific activity helped the broader markets register gains exceeding 1% for the week.
