Nifty, Sensex Logs Modest Gains; Metal Stocks Surge Over 2.5%, HAL Posts Decline in Profit and Revenue

On May 14, the Indian benchmark indices ended the session with modest gains as cooling inflation figures from both the U.S. and India lifted hopes of potential rate cuts. That said, the Nifty ended almost 100 points off the day’s high, weighed down by banking and financial stocks.

At the close, the BSE Sensex stood at 81,330.56, up 0.22%, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 0.36% to close at 24,666.90, giving up early gains. The Bank Nifty declined for the second straight trading day, settling at 54,801.30, down 0.25%.

Indian metal stocks rallied as the U.S. dollar weakened and sentiment improved following signs of easing U.S.-China trade tensions. Tata Steel surged 3.93%, emerging as a top gainer in the metal index after delivering strong quarterly results, with volume growth and cost efficiency as drivers.

Mid-cap and small-cap indices each gained over 1%, continuing their recent outperformance, buoyed by earnings-related gains.

Bharti Airtel also gained nearly 0.75% following its stronger-than-expected results, backed by consistent subscriber growth and improved average revenue per user.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers witnessed a significant surge in share price, climbing over 14% following the announcement of impressive Q4FY25 results.

Hindustan Aeronautics Q4 Results

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) reported an almost 7.70% decline in its consolidated net profit for the March quarter, primarily due to delays in delivering its Tejas Mk 1A light combat aircraft. The aerospace and defence PSU posted a profit of ₹397.66 crore for Q4 FY24, compared to ₹430.86 crore in the same period last year.

Despite continued order momentum in the defence sector, investors had anticipated a potential revenue impact from supply delays in the Tejas programme. The stock price closed at ₹4,768, up by 3.43% on Wednesday.

Nifty Metal - Top Gainer of the Day

The Nifty Metal index jumped by 2.4% on Wednesday. SAIL soared more than 5.7%, the most among the Metal stocks, pulling the Metal index up.
