On Friday, August 29, Indian equity benchmark indices opened the trading session on a flat note with a negative bias. As the session progressed, however, the bulls took charge, pushing the Nifty 50 to an intraday high of 24,572.45. At higher levels, profit booking emerged, and during the latter part of the session, it intensified, driven by a sharp fall in the Reliance Industries’ share price. Reliance share price dropped over 2% on August 29, 2025, on the eve of the company’s 48th AGM. 

At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 ended down by 80.20 points, or 0.30%, at 24,426.85. The Sensex tumbled by 270.92 points, or 0.34%, to 79,809.65. In the last week of August, the Nifty 50 index closed down by 1.78%, while on a monthly basis, the index closed 1.38% down.

FMCG stocks led by Nifty FMCG surged nearly 1%, top sectoral gainers, ahead of next week's GST Council meeting to discuss tax cuts to boost consumption.

Nifty Financial declined by nearly 0.3%, extending its fall for the last five consecutive days.

On the sectoral front, 2 of the 11 key sectoral indices ended in positive territory. Meanwhile, broader indices like Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 ended in the red.

Nifty FMCG - Top Gainer of the Day

Nifty FMCG surged nearly 1%, the top sectoral gainers, ahead of next week's GST Council meeting to discuss tax cuts to boost consumption. Among the index constituents, United Spirits and Colgate-Palmolive (India) were top gainers.  On the flip side, Nifty Realty declined by 1.33%, dragged by Sobha.

Broader Markets Negative

The broader market indices ended on a negative note. The Mid-cap 100 index ended down by 0.57% and the Small-cap 100 index closed lower by 0.39%. 

Market Breadth

As of August 29, 2025, the market breadth was in favour of declining stocks. Out of 3,084 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,323 advanced, 1,668 declined, and 93 remained unchanged. 

A total of 51 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 86 hit their 52-week lows. Additionally, 79 stocks were locked in their upper circuits, whereas 54 stocks were in lower circuits.
