On Wednesday, December 3, Indian equity benchmark indices closed with losses as profit-taking continued for a fourth session. That said, markets recovered from the day’s low.

At the close, the Nifty 50 ended down by 47.10 points or 0.18% at 25,985.10, below the 26,000 mark, while the Sensex declined by 31.46 points or 0.04% to close at 85,106.81. Both benchmark indices extended losses for the fourth consecutive day after hitting record highs on Monday. India's volatility index, India VIX, remained steady.

The rupee weakened past the 90 per U.S. dollar mark to a record low in the session.

On the sectoral front, 5 out of 11 sectoral indices ended in positive territory. The Nifty PSU Bank index tumbled over 3%, after the government said no merger or disinvestment proposals; the index had surged 26% in Sept-Nov. Separately, government data says no proposals to raise the FDI limit in state-owned banks to 49%.

Broader markets declined on Wednesday, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 ending in negative terrain. 

Stock-Specific Highlights

Among individual stocks,

  • Angel One share price fell 5.12% after posting a drop in client acquisition, orders, average daily turnover in futures and options in November.
  • RPP Infra share price rose 2.64% after winning orders worth ₹25.99 crore.

Nifty IT - Top Gainer

The Nifty IT Index was the top gainer on Wednesday, ending higher by 0.76% with 6 out of 10 constituents ending in positive territory. On the flip side, Nifty PSU Bank declined by 3.07% and emerged as the top loser, recording the biggest intraday loss since May 6.

Nifty 50: Top Pullers and Draggers of the Day

The key drivers of the index gains were:

  • HDFC Bank: +34.51 points
  • ICICI Bank: +29.74 points
  • Infosys: +11.54 points

On the other hand, these stocks dragged the index:

  • State Bank of India: -15.02 points
  • Mahindra & Mahindra: -13.12 points
  • Reliance Industries: -10.69 points

Broader Markets End Negative

The broader market indices ended lower on Wednesday. The Nifty Midcap 100 index ended down 0.98% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined by 0.71%.

Market Breadth

As of December 2, 2025, market breadth was in favour of declining stocks. Out of 3,213 stocks traded on the NSE, 1052 advanced, 2,074 declined, and 87 remained unchanged.
