Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) established itself as India’s main energy company after its incorporation on June 23, 1993 from New Delhi. The Group operates in two main areas: exploration, development and production of crude oil, natural gas and value‑added products in India; acquisition of oil and gas acreages outside India; and downstream activities such as refining and marketing of petroleum products, petrochemicals, power generation, LNG supply, pipeline transportation, SEZ development, helicopter services, manufacturing of ethanol and sugar, and green and renewable energy business. The 17 plants and 19 offices of ONGC are based in India while its markets operate across 12 states and exports generate 5.65% of the total turnover. ONGC obtains most of its income through sales made to Oil Marketing Companies operating in India. The ONGC Group has seven subsidiaries and the Integrated Report describes several subsidiaries and joint ventures but does not detail the full structure of the group. As part of its global exploration and production efforts ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL) operates 32 projects across 15 countries.

- Strategic roadmap: ONGC’s Energy Strategy 2040 outlines targets to boost oil and gas production while raising integrated portfolio revenue by 200% and earnings by 400% as non‑hydrocarbon segments reach at least 10% of additional profits and renewable power generation will reach more than 4.1 GW through the Ayana Renewable Power partnership.
- Exploration breakthroughs: ONGC began conducting ultradeepwater drilling in the Andaman Sea by operating the DDKG‑1 rig that will drill at depths exceeding 5,000 metres. The company announced major discoveries when ‘Chola’ was found in Cauvery Offshore basin (August 2024) and ‘Chandramani’ was discovered in Western Offshore basin (July 2024).
